Impact lives in the parallax: our methodology, explained

"Impact lives in the parallax" is Visual Lab's manifesto and working method. Parallax is how astronomers measure distance: one viewpoint is a guess, two is a measurement. Applied to brands, strategy, camera and data each view from a different angle, and the shift between them is the finding.

The sections below cover the astronomy, how it maps onto brand work, the monthly loop it runs on and where the idea came from.

How does parallax measure the distance to a star?

Hold a finger at arm's length and close one eye, then the other. The finger appears to jump against the background. Nothing moved. You looked from two positions a few centimetres apart, and the shift told you something about depth that neither eye could see on its own.

Astronomers scale the same trick up. Photograph a nearby star tonight, wait six months while Earth travels to the opposite side of its orbit, then photograph it again. The baseline between the two photos is roughly 300 million kilometres. Against the far more distant stars behind it, the nearby star appears to shift very slightly. Measure that angle of shift and simple trigonometry gives you the distance.

Neither photograph holds the answer on its own. The distance comes from the difference between the two.

What does that have to do with brands?

We view every brand from three angles.

The strategy view covers what the business is trying to do, who it serves and the position it claims. The camera view is what the brand looks and sounds like when you point a lens at it: the founder on camera, the product in hand, the room it operates from. The data view is what the audience did: watch time, replies, enquiries and bookings.

Each view on its own is a guess. The useful information sits in the shift between them. Say the strategy depends on premium positioning, but the data shows viewers dropping off the moment the premium messaging starts. Neither view has failed. The gap between them is the finding, and you only see it if the same team holds both views at once.

That's the method: hold the views against each other and read the shift. So measurement sits at the start of our creative work rather than at the end, and each month's numbers feed the next brief.

What does the parallax method look like month to month?

In practice, the manifesto runs as a four-part monthly loop.

  • Planning sets the month's content angle from the strategy view and last month's data, rather than from a brainstorm. What worked earns more of the budget, and what didn't gets cut or reworked.
  • Production happens in batches, so one day of capture becomes a stack of channel-ready assets instead of a single hero video.
  • Distribution puts each asset in the placement and format it was designed for, so the numbers that come back can be compared month to month.
  • The results then feed the next plan, so the next planning session starts from the numbers rather than from memory.

One video is a single photograph of the star. The picture gets clearer as the views stack up month after month and more of the decisions rest on measurement.

Why do single-lens suppliers miss?

Most brands have several suppliers, each seeing the brand from one position.

A media buyer sees media. When performance dips, they can ask for a creative refresh, but they never saw the shoot and often can't say what to change. An editor sees the edit: the brief comes in, the cut goes out, and whatever happens after upload is invisible to them. A strategist sees the plan, but rarely the footage or the numbers in the same depth.

None of them is doing bad work. The structure leaves each one holding a single photograph, guessing at depth. When every supplier holds one view, the client ends up as the integrator by default, forwarding emails between specialists and hoping the full picture comes together.

Parallax needs the views held by the same observer. A team that holds all three can explain why the last piece worked before it plans the next one.

Where did the idea come from?

We came up with the idea in 2017, after watching good production underperform for reasons nobody in the production chain could see. Visual Lab opened as a production house in 2020, so we had the camera view first. The same pattern kept showing up: strong footage and unclear results, because the strategy sat in one company and the data sat in another.

We built the lab around that gap. Strategy and data came in-house alongside production, and we now work from our studio in North Strathfield, Sydney. We've worked with 25+ brands, among them Australian Payments Plus, the Australian Payments Network and World Gym. We've also crewed Intel and Acer shoots for another agency.

Every engagement now starts with measurement. A Parallax Session ($4,000 ex GST) is a half-day diagnostic that runs all three views over a brand. It returns an Observation Report and a 90-day roadmap. If an engagement starts within 30 days, the fee is credited against it.

Questions we actually get

What does 'impact lives in the parallax' mean?

It means no single view of a brand gives you the full picture. Strategy, camera and data each see something different. You only get an accurate read when you hold the views against each other, the same way astronomers need two viewpoints to measure a star's distance.

Is Visual Lab a production company or an agency?

An agency. Visual Lab is a human-led creative and strategic marketing agency with its roots in content production. We opened as a production house in 2020, then brought strategy and data under the same roof, because the method needs all three views working together.

What industries does Visual Lab work with?

The 25+ brands we've worked with span finance (HAS, Ryker Capital), payments (Australian Payments Plus and the Australian Payments Network), fitness (World Gym, PHD Strength, Snap Fitness), hospitality and retail (Olive Tree Cafe, 460 Sydney Souvenirs) and skincare (Skin Virtue). We've also crewed tech hardware shoots for Intel and Acer, subcontracted through another agency.

Where is Visual Lab based?

Our studio is at Suite 205, Level 2, 9 George St, North Strathfield NSW 2137, in Sydney. You can reach us at info@visuallab.com.au.

If you want the three views run over your brand, the Parallax Session is where every engagement starts.
